Bangladesh Health Minister Pledges Strict Action Against Ad-din Hospital Following Neonatal Deaths

Health and Family Welfare Adviser Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain announced on Tuesday that authorities are preparing punitive action against Ad-Din Hospital following the deaths of six newborns at the facility. Addressing the launch of a clinical management guideline for measles at the Holy Family Red Crescent Hospital in Dhaka, the minister emphasized that negligence and violations of government regulations will not be tolerated.
The minister underscored critical lapses in the hospital’s operational standards, noting that the facility failed to ensure a safe environment for neonates. Investigations revealed that the hospital lacked necessary ventilation for oxygen supply. Furthermore, reports indicated that no doctors were on duty when the newborns began suffering from respiratory distress, and nursing staff failed to respond to urgent calls for assistance.
Defending the decision to revoke the hospital’s license, Hossain stated that the move was both necessary and justified. He pointed to long-standing systemic irregularities and a lack of accountability within the healthcare sector, vowing that the government would implement sweeping changes to address these deficiencies.
While expressing frustration over the stagnant quality of patient care in the country, the minister acknowledged the successful efforts of medical professionals in combating measles through collaborative outreach. He urged physicians across the nation to perform their duties with integrity and renewed commitment.
The event, chaired by Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College Principal Professor K.M. Mujibul Haque, was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Doctors Association of Bangladesh and hospital administrators. The proceedings concluded with a detailed presentation on medical standards by Assistant Professor Farhana Haque.
