Bangladesh Court Sentences Man to Death for Rape and Murder of Five-Year-Old Child

A Noakhali tribunal sentenced a 26-year-old man to death on Monday for the rape and murder of a five-year-old girl in the Chatkhil upazila. Judge Farzana Akter of the Noakhali Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict, which also imposed a fine of 100,000 taka on the convict, Md. Shahadat.
The case dates back to March 24, 2022, when the victim disappeared from her home. Following an investigation, police recovered the girl’s body from a septic tank behind Shahadat’s residence nine days later, acting on information provided by the suspect. Following the discovery, the victim’s father filed a formal case, leading to Shahadat’s arrest.
During the legal proceedings, Shahadat provided a confessional statement under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. He admitted to the court that he had raped the child and subsequently strangled her to death to prevent the crime from being exposed, later concealing the body in the septic tank.
State prosecutor Selim Shahi expressed satisfaction with the judgment, noting that the verdict serves the cause of justice for the victim and her family. Shahadat, who was present in court when the sentence was handed down, has been transferred to the Noakhali District Jail. The victim’s father also welcomed the ruling and called for the swift execution of the death sentence.
