Awami League supporters stage protest in Mymensingh; police arrest former student leader

Supporters of the now-banned Awami League held a protest march in Ishwarganj, Mymensingh, on Friday, sparking a police investigation into the demonstration. The march, which took place on the Mymensingh-Kishoreganj highway in the Harua area, was organized to demand the release of political prisoners, the withdrawal of pending cases against party members, and the lifting of the official ban on the Awami League and its student wing, the Chhatra League.

The protest was led by Rafiqul Islam, the former joint convener of the local Jubo League, under the initiative of Masud Hasan, the organizational secretary of the Ishwarganj Upazila Awami League. Following the event, footage of the demonstration was shared on social media, including an official posting on the Bangladesh Awami League’s verified Facebook page. In the accompanying statements, organizers threatened to escalate the situation into a mass movement if their demands regarding the release of prisoners and the lifting of political restrictions were not met.

Authorities have responded swiftly to the unauthorized gathering. Police arrested Saddam Hossain, the former general secretary of the Maizbag Union Chhatra League, shortly after the event. According to Ishwarganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rabiul Azam, Hossain was produced before a court on Saturday in connection with a separate sabotage case.

Law enforcement officials have launched a broader review of the incident to identify other participants and determine their origins. Police confirmed that they are analyzing the video footage to identify those involved in the protest and intend to take further legal action based on the results of their investigation.
