As workers, journalists in the country are the most deprived

As working people, Bangladeshi journalists are suffering the most deprivation. Most media outlets do not pay journalists as per Wage Board. But they advertise with false information that salary is paid according to wage board. Unions must be proactive against these owners.

The speakers said this at the Great May Day discussion meeting organized by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Journalists Union (DUJ) at Tafazzal Hossain Manik Mia Auditorium of National Press Club on Friday afternoon.

Quader Gani Chowdhury, Secretary General of BFU said that the contribution of workers is the most in the development of civilization. But they do not get the dignity of labor. Their days are spent in neglect. Sometimes it doesn’t even get the status it deserves. At least 186 workers were killed in workplace accidents in Bangladesh in the first three months of this year. No owner stood by their family. But why would this happen?

Quader Gani Chowdhury said that the responsibility of ensuring the safety of any worker or an employee at the workplace is the responsibility of the concerned authorities. But it is a sad fact that this duty is being neglected in many cases. After each incident, the government and the concerned responsible parties promised to take all measures to ensure the safety of the workers at the workplace. But its reflection has not happened properly.

Kavi Abdul Hai Shikder, editor of Yugantar, said, “Daily Bangla, Bangladesh Times, Bichitra, Anand Bichitra have been closed in a very planned way. As Sheikh Hasina government is responsible for this, our journalist leaders are no less responsible. These four magazines have to be restarted. At least 15 hundred journalists will get job opportunities in this.

Emphasizing on the implementation of the Wage Board in the media, DUZ President Shahidul Islam said that most of the media outlets do not pay salaries according to the Wage Board.
