A UP member was abducted at gunpoint by stopping the motorcycle, demanding a ransom of Tk 30 lakh

A UP member named Rustom Ali was kidnapped by armed miscreants in Ramur Eidgarh Union of Cox’s Bazar. This incident took place in Panerchara Dhalla area of Eidgaon-Eidgarh-Baishari road on Wednesday morning. The UP member could not be rescued till 12:30 noon. Rustom Ali is the current UP member of ward number 9 of Eidgarh Union. His house is in Karliamura village of the same ward.
According to the police, the terrorists abducted the UP member and took him inside the Gohin forest. He was detained there. A police operation is underway to rescue him. On the other hand, the family members claim that the abductors are demanding Tk 30 lakh as ransom after the abduction. There is also a threat to disappear the body after the murder if the ransom money is not received.
Rustam Ali was going to Eidgarh on a motorcycle from Eidgaon market around 6:30 this morning. On reaching Panerchhara area, some armed men stopped the movement and took UP member Rustom and entered the forest.
According to the police and local people, the 10-12 km Eidgaon-Idgarh-Baishari road passes through the forest area. Robberies and kidnappings often take place on this road. After evening, the movement of vehicles is stopped due to the fear of robbery and kidnapping. In case of emergency, if someone wants to go to Eidgaon Sadar by road or from Eidgaon to Eidgarh-Baishari, they have to take police security. In the last three and a half months, at least 12 people including imams, autorickshaw drivers, teachers, and businessmen were kidnapped. Most were released by ransom. At least four people, including policemen and artists, have been killed by robbers on this road in the last decade. Last March 23, two rubber plantation workers were abducted from Eidgarh road. A few hours later they were released after paying a ransom.
Police believe that UP member Rustom Ali was abducted due to past enmity. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Eidgaon Police Station Sifatul Mazdar told Prothom Alo, “Today morning, while going to Karliamura of Eidgarh on a motorcycle from Eidgaon, it was reported that a UP member was abducted from Panirchhara area. Even though the area falls under Ramu police station, the police are conducting operations in the forest area.
OC Sifatul Mazda also said that the police had conducted several raids on this road recently. After that, the robbery and kidnapping stopped for some time. The forest bandits are active again by abducting UP members.

However, it was not found until 12:30 noon. The police is also unaware of the news about the ransom demand of Tk 30 lakh. According to OC Monirul Islam Bhuiya, the Eidgarh Eidgaon Baishari road has been built through the mountains. Eidgaon and Ramu Thana police patrol at some points of the road during the day. Between 10:00 PM and 5:30 AM, police security is required in case of emergency.
SI Khurshed Alam, in-charge of Eidgarh police outpost, said that the police are conducting operations in the forest area to rescue UP member Rustom since morning. Various stories are being heard in the area about the kidnapping of UP members. Investigation is on whether there is any other incident behind the abduction.
