Sudipto Sen, the director behind the highly controversial and commercially successful 2023 Hindi film “The Kerala Story,” has stated he will no longer collaborate with major Bollywood stars like Shah Rukh Khan or Akshay Kumar, citing concerns over preserving directorial freedom. Sen believes working with high-profile actors compromises a filmmaker’s vision and introduces undue pressures.

The Siliguri-born director, who began his career as a documentary filmmaker before transitioning to mainstream Bollywood, garnered significant attention and debate with “The Kerala Story.” The film faced widespread controversy, including bans and censorship issues in various regions, firmly associating Sen with its challenging reception.

Sen indicated that experiences gained during the production of “The Kerala Story” solidified his resolve to avoid working with established stars in the future. He reportedly made a conscious decision during that film’s making not to cast any big names.

“I am a self-reliant person, but not overly confident,” Sen explained, emphasizing his preference for developing and telling his own stories. He expressed that the presence of a prominent star inevitably adds “extra pressure” and “far greater responsibility” to any cinematic project, which he finds difficult to manage.

Furthermore, Sen noted that when a film achieves blockbuster status, its success is often attributed solely to the star, overshadowing the director’s contribution. He stated his aversion to depending on others, asserting his desire to consistently create films guided by his personal perspective and vision.
