Dhallywood Actress Pori Moni Demands Accountability for 2021 Arrest Alleging State Misconduct

Dhallywood actress Pori Moni has publicly challenged the state, demanding accountability for her high-profile arrest in 2021, which she claims was orchestrated by influential interests. The actress, who has largely stepped away from the film industry, took to social media late Friday to assert that her detention was unlawful and part of a targeted campaign that irreparably damaged her personal, social, and professional life.
Her statement follows recent revelations made by the former intelligence chief of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Lieutenant Colonel Khairul Islam, during an online talk show. According to Pori Moni, Islam’s comments confirmed that the lengthy raid on her Banani residence and her subsequent arrest were carried out under the direct instructions of the former director general of RAB and former Inspector General of Police, Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun.
Reflecting on the 28 days she spent in jail following the raid, the actress described the experience as a profound trauma that shattered her reputation and psychological well-being. She questioned whether the state would accept responsibility for the public perception and stigma created by the proceedings, which she characterized as a painful chapter in the country’s history. Despite her grievances, Pori Moni emphasized that she is not seeking revenge, but rather justice and a guarantee that no other innocent individual will endure similar treatment in the future.
The actress expressed a desire to move past the trauma to focus on her career, her child, and her family, stating that she intends to live her life with the same freedom she once enjoyed.
The legal challenges surrounding Pori Moni remain complex and ongoing. Her 2021 arrest followed a raid by RAB-1, during which authorities claimed to have seized foreign liquor and narcotics from her home. That case, initiated under the Narcotics Control Act, is currently in the witness deposition stage at a special judge’s court in Dhaka.
Parallel to her own criminal case, the actress is involved in protracted legal battles stemming from an incident at the Dhaka Boat Club in June 2021. Pori Moni had filed a lawsuit against businessman Nasir Uddin Mahmud and others, alleging attempted rape and murder. While formal charges were framed against the accused in 2022, the case remains pending. Conversely, Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed a counter-lawsuit against the actress, alleging physical assault and attempted murder during the same encounter, a matter that is also currently being adjudicated in court.
