Projected costs for the construction of two major metro rail lines in Dhaka have more than doubled, with revised estimates reaching 213.99 billion taka, up from the initial budget of 93.8 billion taka. The new financial proposal is currently awaiting approval from the Planning Commission.
The expansion involves two distinct infrastructure initiatives. The first is an underground metro rail project spanning from Kamalapur to the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The second project covers an extensive route originating in Savar and traversing through Gabtoli, Mirpur, and Gulshan before terminating in Bhatara.
The significant cost escalation reflects substantial adjustments to the original financial framework of these transportation developments. Officials are now tasked with justifying the budget hike to the Planning Commission to secure the necessary funding to proceed with the construction of these transit networks.
