Bangladesh government aims to double tourism contribution to GDP to 7 percent

The government aims to double the tourism sector’s contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), targeting an increase from the current three percent to between six and seven percent, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism Afroza Khanam announced on Saturday.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the Travel and Tourism Development Centre in Dhaka, Minister Khanam emphasized the necessity of integrating the travel, tourism, aviation, and hospitality sectors to elevate the industry to international standards. She noted that the government, under the guidance of Prime Minister Tareque Rahman, is actively pursuing initiatives to modernize the sector.
The Minister highlighted that the tourism industry has seen little significant progress over the past 17 years. To reverse this trend, she stated that the current administration is committed to providing necessary policy support and institutional backing to realize the sector’s economic potential.
Minister Khanam called upon private sector stakeholders to play a proactive role in ensuring the sustainable development of the industry. She asserted that the newly launched Travel and Tourism Development Centre would serve as a vital platform for stakeholders to collaborate effectively.
The event was attended by prominent industry leaders and various representatives from the tourism and hospitality sectors. The Minister expressed optimism that through collective effort and strategic cooperation, Bangladesh can successfully establish itself as a premier international tourist destination.
