Police arrest two men in Hathazari for manufacturing and trafficking illegal firearms

HATHAZARI, Bangladesh — Police in Hathazari, Chittagong, arrested two men late Monday following the seizure of five domestically manufactured firearms, 20 rounds of ammunition, and various weapons-manufacturing equipment. The arrests were made during a raid in Ward No. 2 of Mirzapur Union.
The suspects have been identified as Jamal Hossain, a mason, and Kabir Ahmad, an auto-rickshaw driver. Both men are residents of Hathazari. While the pair maintained public roles in their respective trades, authorities allege they were secretly operating as illegal arms traffickers.
Preliminary interrogations revealed that the seized weapons were produced at an auto-rickshaw garage in the Sarkarhat area of Hathazari. The suspects identified an employee named Osman as the primary manufacturer who supplied the weapons to them for sale. Authorities noted that because the garage owner is currently abroad, Osman had been managing the facility and allegedly using it as a front for illicit arms production. Police have launched a manhunt to locate and arrest Osman.
Kazi Md. Tareq Aziz, Additional Superintendent of Police for the Hathazari Circle, stated that law enforcement officials posed as prospective buyers to apprehend the suspects. During negotiations, Jamal and Kabir reportedly offered the weapons for prices ranging between 20,000 and 50,000 taka.
Investigators believe the suspects utilized their ordinary professions as cover to avoid detection while conducting their illicit trade. A case has been filed against the detainees under the Arms Act, and further investigation is ongoing.
