Two police officers suspended after detainees record pro-Awami League video in Narayanganj police custody

NARAYANGANJ, Bangladesh — Authorities have withdrawn two police officers from duty following the circulation of a viral video showing ten detainees chanting political slogans inside the holding cell of Fatullah Model Police Station. The video, which surfaced on social media, features the detainees shouting slogans in support of the Awami League, a political organization that is currently facing a ban.
The two officers withdrawn are Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam and Constable Jahangir Hossain. The incident has triggered a debate regarding police protocol and security oversight, specifically concerning how the detainees gained access to a mobile phone while in custody to record and upload the footage.
The ten individuals were arrested on Saturday night in the Signboard area of the Dhaka-Narayanganj highway. According to police reports, the group was apprehended while allegedly preparing for a political procession. They were subsequently charged under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The detainees have been identified as Ferdous, 18; Abrar Ahmed, 18; Yasin, 18; Rabbi, 20; Shimul, 20; and Nayan, 18. Four other detainees are minors. All are residents of the Paikpara and Panchabati areas of Narayanganj.
Mahbub Alam, the officer-in-charge of Fatullah Model Police Station, stated that Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam had allowed the detainees to use a mobile phone to contact their families, believing the gesture to be a procedural courtesy for informing guardians of the arrests. The detainees reportedly used that window of opportunity to record the video and upload it to a Facebook page.
The detainees were produced before a court on Sunday and subsequently sent to jail. Abdul Samad, the inspector of the Narayanganj court police, confirmed that authorities have filed a petition seeking a seven-day remand to further interrogate the suspects.
