Dope test results for two Rangpur murder suspects return negative for drug use

RANGPUR — The dope test results for Siddhartha Das and Mugdho Das, the primary suspects in the murder of four members of a single family in Rangpur, have returned negative for drug use, police confirmed on Monday.
The Rangpur Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) received the medical reports this afternoon following examinations conducted at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. Authorities had collected urine samples from the suspects inside the Rangpur Central Jail on Sunday to avoid potential security risks associated with transporting them to the hospital.
Sanatan Chakraborty, Deputy Police Commissioner of the Rangpur Metropolitan DB, stated that the results showed no trace of narcotics in the suspects’ systems. However, he noted that the samples were collected eight days after the incident, a duration that significantly reduces the efficacy of urine testing. He indicated that testing would have been more accurate had it been performed within two to three days of the killings.
The negative test results appear to conflict with earlier police statements and the suspects’ own testimonies. Following their arrest, Siddhartha and Mugdho had claimed in their statements to the court that they had consumed eight to nine Yaba tablets immediately prior to the murders. When asked about the discrepancy, the Deputy Police Commissioner stated that the investigation is ongoing and that necessary actions will be determined as the probe continues.
The official also noted the technical limitations of the testing process, clarifying that police were restricted to urine analysis as there were no facilities available to conduct hair or blood sample testing at the hospital.
The suspects, who are currently being held in Rangpur Central Jail, have already provided judicial confessions under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, admitting to their involvement in the killings.
The incident occurred on the night of August 22, when police recovered the bodies of retired Rangpur Zila School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife, and their two children from their home in the Mashuapara area of the city. Investigators initially stated that the motive for the killings stemmed from a dispute over the victims’ objection to the suspects’ drug use. Following the discovery of the bodies, Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of the victim, filed a murder case at the Kotwali Police Station against unidentified individuals.
