Five Year Old Kurigram Boy Battles Hydrocephalus as Family Appeals for Medical Aid

A five-year-old boy named Ariful Islam is battling a severe case of hydrocephalus, a condition characterized by an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. The illness has caused his head to grow to an extreme size, leaving him unable to walk and inflicting chronic pain and burning sensations.
Ariful is the son of day laborer Momin Ali and homemaker Ayesha Begum, residing in South Chhat Gopalpur under the Bhurungamari Upazila of Kurigram district. Medical experts explain that the condition occurs when cerebrospinal fluid, which typically nourishes the brain and removes waste, fails to drain properly, leading to dangerous fluid buildup within the skull.
Following a 21-day admission at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, Ariful underwent his first surgical procedure on August 29. According to his cousin, Md. Jahurul Islam, who has been assisting the family at the hospital, medical professionals have advised that the child requires at least two more surgeries, with the next operation scheduled in approximately 14 days.
The family’s financial resources have been exhausted by the initial medical expenses. While they managed to cover the first surgery through loans and the support of relatives and neighbors, they currently lack the funds to continue the necessary treatment.
