US Ambassador Brent Christensen inspects Teesta Barrage to review water management and flood control systems

United States Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen visited the Teesta Barrage in the Gaddimari area of Lalmonirhat’s Hatibandha Upazila on Sunday to observe the facility’s water management and flood control infrastructure.
Accompanied by his wife, Diane Dow, the Ambassador arrived at the Teesta Barrage at approximately 11:30 a.m. During the site visit, which lasted until 2:00 p.m., Christensen held discussions with local administration officials, representatives from the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), and local community leaders.
BWDB engineers provided a technical briefing on the irrigation project, demonstrating how the barrage gates are operated to regulate water flow and manage regional flood risks. The Ambassador toured the control room, where he reviewed data on river flow and water level measurements, and inspected the main barrage bridge.
The day’s itinerary began with Christensen’s departure from Dhaka via a morning flight to Syedpur Airport in Nilphamari. Prior to arriving at the Teesta Barrage, he visited the Paragon Dairy farm in the Betgari area of Rangpur’s Gangachara Upazila and observed the traditional local process of mustard oil extraction using mechanical oil presses. Following lunch at the Teesta Barrage guest house, the Ambassador departed by road for the ESDO guest house in Tetulia, Panchagarh.
Delegation members accompanying the Ambassador included U.S. Embassy officials Nicole Clarissa Besnard, Syed Faizus Salehin, and political specialist Firoz Ahmed, alongside former Member of Parliament for Nilphamari-1, Shahrin Islam Chowdhury.
The briefing at the Teesta Barrage was attended by senior officials, including BWDB Director General Ruhul Amin, Additional Chief Engineer for the Rangpur Northern Region Sarfaraz Banda, and Superintending Engineers Ahsan Habib and Mizanur Rahman. Executive Engineer of the Dalia BWDB Amitabh Chandra, Hatibandha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Deep John Mitra, and Dimla UNO Imranuzzaman were also present during the discussions.
