Former Awami League leader injured while attempting to flee arrest in Kurigram

A former leader of the banned Awami League was arrested by police in Kurigram early Thursday after sustaining injuries while attempting to flee his residence via the rooftop.
The suspect, Minhajul Islam, was apprehended in Sannyasi village under the Holokhana Union of Kurigram Sadar Upazila. Minhajul served as the former deputy publicity secretary of the Kurigram district Awami League and is the former president of the district unit of the outlawed Chhatra League. He also served as a member and acting chairman of the Kurigram District Council.
According to local police, there were active arrest warrants against Minhajul in connection with two criminal cases, including the murder of Ashik during the July uprising. Officers from the Kurigram Sadar Police Station arrived at his residence at approximately 1:30 a.m. following a tip-off.
Police surrounded the property and attempted to call for Minhajul, but received no response. Officials state that upon realizing the residence was surrounded, Minhajul attempted to escape across the roof. While descending the rear of the building, he fell onto a tin fence, resulting in a fractured bone and the severance of a toe.
Minhajul was taken into custody by police and subsequently transported to Kurigram General Hospital for medical treatment. Kamal Ahmad, Officer-in-Charge of the Kurigram Sadar Police Station, confirmed that the suspect remains under police guard at the hospital. Once he is medically cleared, he will be produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
