Rangpur police disclose chilling details of quadruple murder by two youths following drug use and land dispute

RANGPUR — Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud has provided a detailed account of the brutal murders of a retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher and his family, revealing that the perpetrators killed the victims after being confronted during a drug-fueled episode on the building’s rooftop.
During a press conference at the police commissioner’s office on Thursday, Commissioner Mabud identified the suspects as Siddhartha Das and Mugdho Das. According to the investigation, the two young men had been using Yaba, a methamphetamine-based stimulant, on the rooftop of the residence belonging to Ganapati Chakraborty. They favored the location because the rooftop’s walls provided cover from neighboring properties.
The commissioner stated that on the night of the incident, the suspects consumed eight tablets of Yaba—the largest amount they had ever taken at once. When Ganapati Chakraborty went to the roof the following morning and discovered them, he scolded the men for their presence. In a state of drug-induced confusion and fear of social repercussions, the pair strangled the 65-year-old teacher using a gamchha, a traditional cloth.
As Ganapati’s wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, and their daughter, Agami Chakraborty, arrived on the roof after hearing the commotion, the suspects allegedly killed them as well. The perpetrators used the same cloth to strangle the wife and used their hands and a rope found near a pigeon coop to kill the daughter. Following the murders, the suspects cut the building’s electrical lines to disable security cameras. They then moved the bodies of the mother and daughter toward the stairwell gate to prevent them from being seen from an adjacent roof.
The final victim was the couple’s 12-year-old son, Ayush Chakraborty. The child woke up and recognized Siddhartha Das, asking him why he was inside the house. Fearing the boy might alert neighbors, the suspects strangled him to death with a piece of cloth.
Commissioner Mabud addressed inconsistencies regarding previous statements made by police, particularly concerning the death of the 12-year-old boy. While earlier reports suggested the child was attacked in his sleep, the suspects later testified in court that the boy had woken up and identified one of the attackers.
The investigation into the motive has also expanded. While initial reports cited the confrontation over drug use as the primary catalyst, the Commissioner stated that police are now investigating a long-standing grievance regarding a land dispute. Siddhartha Das reportedly claimed that his ancestors had sold property to the Chakraborty family, and he harbored resentment over the transaction. Furthermore, investigators are looking into potential social friction, noting that the suspects and the victims belonged to different communities, which may have contributed to underlying tensions.
The bodies of Ganapati Chakraborty, his wife Pritilata, 50, their daughter Agami, 25, and son Ayush, 12, were recovered from their home in the Masuapara area of Rangpur city last Saturday night. All four victims died from strangulation.
Following his brief statement, Commissioner Mabud faced criticism from the media for abruptly ending the press conference after answering only two questions. Journalists expressed frustration over the lack of opportunity to seek further clarification regarding the shifting timeline and motives provided by the police.
