Witness provides testimony in Rangpur teacher family murder case as police order drug tests for suspects

A key witness in the murder case of retired Rangpur Zilla School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty and three members of his family has provided a formal statement to a magistrate. The witness, Simanta Das, appeared before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Rafiqul Islam on Tuesday night to testify regarding the deaths.
Inspector Jinnat Ali of the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Detective Branch, who was recently assigned to lead the investigation, confirmed the development. According to the investigator, the court recorded the testimony to assist in the ongoing probe. Simanta Das, an associate of the primary suspects, Siddhartha Das and Mugdha Das, corroborated the earlier confessions provided by the accused. Specifically, he confirmed that Siddhartha and Mugdha had visited his residence on the night of the murders to consume narcotics.
Police had previously identified the suspects’ drug use at Simanta’s home as a critical detail during a press briefing held Sunday following the initial arrests. To further substantiate these findings, law enforcement authorities have initiated mandatory drug tests for both suspects. Inspector Jinnat Ali stated that judicial approval for the testing was granted on Monday, and the suspects are scheduled to undergo the procedure on Wednesday.
The investigation into the quadruple homicide was transferred to the Detective Branch on Monday night. The case was initially registered at Kotwali Police Station by Gopinath Chakraborty, the elder brother of the victim, Ganapati Chakraborty. Inspector Jinnat Ali emphasized that the agency is committed to conducting a transparent and thorough investigation to address public concerns and ensure that justice is served.
The bodies of 65-year-old Ganapati Chakraborty, his 50-year-old wife Pritilata Chakraborty, their 25-year-old daughter Agami Chakraborty, and 12-year-old son Ayush Chakraborty were discovered at their home in the Masuapara area of Kamal Kachna, Rangpur, last Saturday night. Preliminary forensic findings suggest that all four victims were killed by strangulation.
