Authorities Recover Fertilizer Following Mob Raid on Kurigram Dealer Warehouse

Authorities in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari upazila have launched an operation to recover hundreds of bags of fertilizer looted from a local dealership, while simultaneously cracking down on illicit sales practices in the region.
The incident occurred Sunday morning when a group of farmers broke into the Shah Amanat Traders warehouse in Shilkuri union, alleging a shortage of supplies. According to official data from the Department of Agricultural Extension, the group seized 202 bags of urea and 23 bags of potash from the warehouse’s total inventory of 342 bags.
By Sunday evening, local administration and police, assisted by members of the local Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), had recovered 100 of the stolen 50-kilogram bags. Officials confirmed that efforts to locate and retrieve the remaining fertilizer are ongoing.
Abdullah Al Mamun, Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension in Kurigram, visited the site alongside Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Amrito Debnath and Assistant Superintendent of Police Montasir Mamun Mun. Addressing the situation, Al Mamun emphasized that while fertilizer will be redistributed to meet farmers’ needs—including sourcing supplies from neighboring unions if necessary—the act of mob looting at a dealership is unacceptable.
Mohammad Ali, General Secretary of the Shilkuri union unit of the BNP, stated that his party is working alongside the administration to ensure the recovered fertilizer is distributed fairly among the farming community.
Separately, a mobile court led by UNO Amrito Debnath fined a different fertilizer dealer in Paglarhat Bazar 5,000 taka on Sunday afternoon. The dealer, Nur Alam, was penalized for selling fertilizer to individuals who were not farmers, violating established distribution protocols.
The local administration remains focused on stabilizing fertilizer supply chains across the upazila to prevent further unrest and ensure equitable access for agricultural workers.
