President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Pays Tribute to Liberation War Martyrs at National Memorial

SAVAR, Bangladesh — Newly inaugurated President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir paid formal tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar on Saturday morning.

The President arrived at the memorial at 10:22 a.m., a day after assuming office. Upon his arrival, he placed a floral wreath at the altar to honor those who sacrificed their lives for the nation’s independence. A ceremonial contingent representing the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Force offered a state salute as bugles played the Last Post.

President Alamgir stood in solemn silence for several minutes to commemorate the fallen. Following the tribute, he signed the visitor’s book kept at the memorial premises before departing at 10:37 a.m.

Authorities implemented heightened security measures across the memorial grounds and surrounding areas throughout the morning to facilitate the presidential visit. Traffic along the adjacent Dhaka-Aricha highway remained uninterrupted, with police forces deployed along both sides of the route to ensure public safety.

Following his visit to Savar, President Alamgir returned to his official residence on Hare Road in the capital, arriving shortly before noon. Security, including personnel from the President Guard Regiment and various intelligence agencies, has been bolstered around the residence. The President is scheduled to relocate to the official presidential palace, Bangabhaban, on Sunday.

The President’s visit follows his swearing-in ceremony held Friday evening at the Bangabhaban Darbar Hall. Acting Speaker of Parliament Kaiser Kamal administered the oath of office for the nation’s highest constitutional position. The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, including outgoing Acting President and Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, former Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, and Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman. Members of the cabinet, foreign diplomats, lawmakers, and senior civil and military officials were also present.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir secured the presidency following a parliamentary election held last Thursday, the first such contest in 35 years. Out of 349 total members of parliament, 343 cast their votes. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party candidate secured 255 votes, defeating Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmed, the candidate for the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance, who received 88 votes.
