Court Grants Five-Day Remand for Suspect Accused of Extortion and Assaulting Dhaka Medical College Professor

A Dhaka court on Saturday granted a five-day remand for Farhan Shahriar, also known as Evan, in connection with a case involving the intimidation, physical assault, and extortion of Professor Md. Asadur Rahman, a senior physician at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Monjurul Islam issued the order following a hearing. Sub-Inspector Rokonuzzaman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) prosecution department confirmed the judicial decision. The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Md. Atikuzzaman of Paltan Model Police Station, had initially requested a 10-day remand to facilitate interrogation.
According to the case files, Professor Rahman, 57, who heads the Ear, Nose, Throat, and Head-Neck Surgery department at Dhaka Medical College, had been practicing at the Popular Diagnostic Centre in the capital’s Shantinagar area for two months. On the night of August 17, as the professor was boarding a CNG-run auto-rickshaw outside the diagnostic center, the suspects intercepted his vehicle.
The suspects allegedly dragged the professor from the vehicle, and an accomplice identified as Jibon, also known as Adil, struck him in the right eye, causing severe bleeding. The attackers continued to assault the professor, inflicting multiple injuries to his head and eyes while issuing threats. While passersby managed to detain Jibon at the scene, others involved in the assault fled.
The remand application further states that the professor had previously received telephone calls from unknown numbers demanding an extortion payment of $15,000. Law enforcement utilized information technology and intelligence to track the calls, leading to the arrest of Farhan at his residence in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, on Friday with the assistance of local police.
During initial questioning, Farhan reportedly confessed to his presence at the scene and involvement in the assault. Investigators stated that the remand is necessary to identify the remaining suspects, establish their whereabouts, and uncover further details regarding the extortion plot. Two suspects have been arrested in the case thus far, with Jibon currently being held in judicial custody.
