Student wing leaders expelled in Mymensingh following violent attack on veterinarian over extortion demand

MYMENSINGH — A veterinarian in Mymensingh was allegedly assaulted and his clinic vandalized by a group led by a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader, an incident that prompted the student organization to expel the accused.

The victim, identified as Ashikur Rahman, filed a formal police complaint on Saturday naming Talhazur Rahman, Afrin Rashid Sejuti, and an individual identified as Sakib. The incident occurred Friday evening at Doctors Pet Care, located in an alley adjacent to Mymensingh Zila School.

According to the complaint, the suspects had frequently demanded 500,000 BDT in extortion money. Rahman alleged that when he refused to pay, the group threatened him and his family. The confrontation escalated Friday evening when the suspects entered the clinic, demanded payment, and subsequently beat Rahman with iron rods after disabling the security cameras. Rahman’s staff member, Ishan Ahmed, was also assaulted while attempting to intervene, and Rahman’s wife, Sajnin Tasnin Siddiqui, was allegedly subjected to an abduction attempt.

Rahman further claimed that 320,150 BDT was stolen from the cash box and equipment, including lighting and CCTV hardware, was destroyed, resulting in damages estimated at 180,000 BDT. He alleged that the attackers threatened to kill him and his family if he reported the incident to the police.

A 108-second CCTV recording of the assault surfaced on social media on Saturday. The footage shows a woman hitting the doctor with a shoe while Talhazur Rahman—a joint general secretary of the metropolitan JCD unit—records the incident on his mobile phone before joining the physical assault.

Rahman later told investigators that the violence may have stemmed from a dispute involving Afrin Rashid, who had been involved in online altercations regarding another veterinarian. The attackers allegedly suspected Rahman of using anonymous accounts to post critical comments about Rashid.

Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police Abdullah Al Mamun stated that police are investigating the claims, noting that preliminary findings suggest the attack followed a personal dispute involving the treatment and subsequent death of a pet. The suspects have reportedly gone into hiding, and authorities are taking legal action.

Following the circulation of the video, the central committee of the Chhatra Dal announced the expulsion of Talhazur Rahman and Assistant Religious Affairs Secretary Abu Tahir Rahman for violating organizational discipline.

Metropolitan JCD President Gobinda Roy confirmed the expulsions. He noted that while Talhazur was dismissed due to the violent incident at the clinic, Abu Tahir was expelled following reports and visual evidence linking him to the presence of an Awami League rally, which triggered a formal investigation by the organization.
