Police arrest six in Chittagong after employee steals gold bangles from jewelry store

CHITTAGONG – Police have arrested six individuals, including a long-term employee, following the theft of 55 gold bangles from a jewelry store in the port city of Chittagong. The recovery operation, conducted across the Kotwali area, resulted in the seizure of over 99 bhori of gold jewelry.
The incident occurred on August 14 at New Kanak Bahar Jewelers, located in the Mimi Super Market area of Probartak Mor. Authorities identified the primary suspect as 36-year-old Romen Dey, who had been employed at the store for approximately 13 years. According to police reports, Dey systematically replaced authentic gold bangles with imitation jewelry while the items were under his supervision.
The scheme was uncovered when other staff members noticed discrepancies during a routine inventory check on the afternoon of August 14. Upon realizing the store owner, Biplob Basak, was being alerted to the shortage, Dey fled the premises under the pretense of using the restroom.
Following a formal complaint filed by Basak on August 15, law enforcement launched an investigation. Romen Dey was apprehended on Tuesday at approximately 2:00 a.m. near the Faujdarhat highway in Sitakunda. During interrogation, Dey admitted to pawning the stolen gold at various jewelry shops and with private lenders to obtain cash.
During a press conference held Friday at the Panchlaish Police Station, Sohel Parvez, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Chittagong Metropolitan Police (North), confirmed the recovery of the stolen items. “The suspect admitted to removing the bangles and pledging them to various businesses for financial gain,” Parvez stated.
In addition to Romen Dey, police arrested five other individuals linked to the case: Shyamal Singha, Joy Dey (alias Babu), Roni Dey, Swapna Dey, and Imon Dey. All six suspects are currently facing legal proceedings as the investigation continues. Officials present at the briefing included Assistant Commissioner of the Panchlaish zone, Kazi Md. Bidhan Abid, and the Officer-in-Charge of Panchlaish Police Station, Md. Jahedul Islam.
