Measles and Related Complications Claim Over 900 Children in Five Months

The death toll from measles and measles-like symptoms has surpassed 900 in Bangladesh over the past five months, according to the latest data released by the Directorate General of Health Services on Saturday.

Health officials reported that eight additional children succumbed to symptoms associated with the disease during the 24-hour period between 8:00 a.m. Friday and 8:00 a.m. Saturday. Of these recent fatalities, six occurred in Dhaka, while two were recorded in Sylhet.

Since March 15, the cumulative death toll has reached 902. This figure includes 803 children who died from measles-like symptoms and 99 children whose deaths were directly attributed to confirmed measles infections.

The surge in cases remains significant, with 798 new infections reported in the last 24 hours alone, comprising 728 cases of measles-like symptoms and 70 confirmed measles cases. Over the five-month period, the country has recorded a total of 159,576 cases, consisting of 141,776 children suffering from symptoms and 17,800 confirmed measles diagnoses.

Data indicates that 119,089 children have recovered from the illness since mid-March. Hospitalization rates remain high, with 700 children admitted for treatment in the last 24 hours, while 549 patients were discharged after making a recovery.
