Mob Attacks Power Substation in Dinajpur Over Load Shedding and Billing Complaints

A mob attacked and vandalized a power substation in the Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur on Monday evening, following widespread public frustration over frequent load-shedding and high electricity bills. The incident, which occurred at the Aftabganj substation under the jurisdiction of the Dinajpur Palli Bidyut Samity-2, has prompted an official police investigation.
The disturbance began at approximately 6:00 p.m. and lasted for nearly two hours. On Tuesday, Md. Kamruzzaman, Deputy General Manager of Dinajpur Palli Bidyut Samity-2, filed a general diary at the Nawabganj Police Station, naming 200 to 250 unidentified individuals as suspects in the attack.
Footage of the incident, which has since circulated on social media, shows over 100 people striking the substation’s main gate with bamboo sticks. Attackers were also recorded throwing bricks at the facility, shattering the glass and damaging the metal grilles of office windows on both the ground and second floors. Amidst chants of slogans, several individuals were seen celebrating with sticks in hand while women and children were observed in the vicinity.
Preliminary police reports confirm significant damage to the substation infrastructure, including the main gate, multiple window panes on the building’s north and west sides, and a security surveillance camera. The glass panels adjacent to the staircase were also destroyed during the assault.
Abdullah Al Mamun, officer-in-charge of the Aftabganj police investigation center, stated that authorities are currently reviewing the video evidence to identify those responsible. He emphasized that legal action will be taken against the perpetrators once they are identified.
