Computer shop worker murdered in Mymensingh sparks violent protest and arson attacks

MYMENSINGH — A 25-year-old computer shop employee was hacked to death by a group of assailants in Mymensingh city on Thursday morning, triggering violent retaliatory protests in the area.

The victim, identified as Mohammad Rabbi, was attacked at a shop near the regional passport office in the Maskanda area at approximately 9:30 a.m. Rabbi, a resident of the Morol Bari area near District Council High School Road, worked at a local business known as Akash Computer. He was transported to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital by witnesses, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Tensions escalated on Thursday evening when angry local residents set fire to several houses belonging to the accused. Police were deployed to the scene to restore order. Ashraful Karim, the Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) for Mymensingh, confirmed that authorities received reports of three houses being torched and stated that police were actively managing the situation.

Preliminary police investigations suggest the killing stemmed from a long-standing dispute between two factions. According to officials, a mediation meeting was held on Wednesday to resolve the conflict, which remains pending in court, but the parties failed to reach an agreement.

Rangpur Sector Commander Colonel Robayet Hasan led the meeting on behalf of BGB. On behalf of BSF, Gopalpur sector commander of Cooch Behar district, Sankasha Prasad led the meeting.

Police have identified eight suspects in connection with the murder, including Delwar Hossain, also known as Dilu, the joint convener of the Mymensingh Metropolitan BNP’s Ward 15 committee. Abdullah Al Mamun, Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration), stated that investigators have obtained the names of the attackers and are currently conducting operations to apprehend the suspects, who fled the area immediately following the incident.

Shafiqul Islam, the convener of the Mymensingh Metropolitan BNP, claimed he was unaware of the specifics of the incident. He expressed skepticism regarding the involvement of Delwar Hossain, adding that the party would look into the matter and take necessary action if the allegations are substantiated.

Authorities confirmed that the suspects remain in hiding as the investigation continues.
