Alliance Francaise de Dhaka Hosts Cultural Evening Blending Bengali and French Monsoon Literature and Music

Alliance Francaise de Dhaka hosted a special cultural evening titled “Poetic Echoes with Monsoon Melodies” this Saturday, blending Bengali and French literature and music to capture the multifaceted essence of the monsoon season. The event explored the theme of rain through various emotional lenses, ranging from romance and nostalgia to melancholy and reflection.
The program featured a selection of works from five prominent Bengali literary and musical icons: Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Atulprasad Sen, Dwijendralal Ray, and Rajanikanta Sen. This was complemented by the recitation of poems by celebrated French authors Charles Baudelaire, Victor Hugo, and Paul Verlaine, providing an international perspective on nature and the human condition.
The evening commenced with a tribute to Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, featuring a fusion of poetry and music with performances of “Emon-o Dine Tare Bola Jay” and “Aji Jhor-jhor Mukhor Bador Dine.” The focus then shifted to the French literary tradition, where the poetry of Charles Baudelaire offered insights into urban life, aesthetic melancholy, and the internal human struggle set against the backdrop of rain.
The Bengali segment continued with music by Rajanikanta Sen, excerpts from Kazi Nazrul Islam’s short story “Badol Borishone,” and a collaborative performance of poems and songs by Atulprasad Sen. The French influence was further represented by the works of Victor Hugo, which highlighted the intrinsic link between the natural world and human emotion. This was followed by a return to Bengali works, with songs by Dwijendralal Ray and further compositions by Tagore that captured the vibrant, festive spirit of the rainy season.
In the final portion of the event, two poems by French poet Paul Verlaine were presented in a unique poetic synthesis. The evening concluded with a stirring performance of “Aj Srishti Sukher Ullashe” by Bangladesh’s National Poet, Kazi Nazrul Islam.
The event was curated and directed by Farhana Trina, founder of Kabya Kuhuk, with musical performances by Samia Ahsan.
