Model Mishti Subash formally arrested in July attempted murder case

A Dhaka court has ordered model Mosa. Simu Akter Brishti, widely known as “Mishti Subash,” to be formally arrested in connection with an attempted murder case linked to the July anti-discrimination student movement. Senior Judicial Magistrate Md. Tajul Islam Sohag granted the petition filed by Ashulia police on Thursday following a hearing.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Shafiul Alam Sohag previously submitted the application on August 3, alleging that the model played a role in the violence that erupted in the Baipail area of Ashulia during the protests. According to the court documents, investigations have established a preliminary link between the suspect and the orchestration of the gunfire incidents during the uprising.
The case, initiated by victim Ruhul Amin on October 3, names 53 individuals as primary suspects. Authorities argue that keeping the model in custody is essential for the integrity of the ongoing investigation, as she is currently detained in connection with a separate criminal matter at Ashulia Police Station.
The model first drew significant public and media attention in March, when she was detained at the National Memorial in Savar for participating in a pro-Awami League demonstration. During that event, she and others displayed placards of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman while chanting slogans against the interim government. That incident resulted in her being remanded under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Speaking briefly to reporters while being transported from the courtroom detention area, the model denied political affiliation, claiming her actions were motivated by personal devotion to the country’s founding history. She requested legal bail, citing her father’s failing health.
To date, Mishti Subash has been named in four separate criminal cases. While she has successfully secured bail in three of those matters, this latest judicial order ensures her continued incarceration as the investigation into the July violence proceeds.
