Former bureaucrat Syed Jaglul Pasha jailed in attempted murder case involving Khaleda Zia

A Dhaka metropolitan court has ordered former Joint Secretary Syed Jaglul Pasha to be sent to prison in connection with an attempted murder case involving the blockade of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia’s residence in 2013. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin issued the order on Wednesday, with a hearing on a police petition for a 10-day remand scheduled for Thursday.
Pasha, the 17th accused named in the case, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police late Tuesday at his residence in Bashundhara. While he was brought to the court premises on Wednesday, he was not presented inside the courtroom during the proceedings. Inspector Anwar Hossain of the DB’s Gulshan zonal team, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that authorities are seeking the remand to uncover further details regarding the incident and to locate other suspects currently at large.
The case was originally filed on October 4, 2024, by Shariful Islam Shawon, a former leader of the Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal at Rajshahi University, naming 111 individuals as suspects. To date, four people have been arrested in connection with the investigation.
The allegations stem from events surrounding the “March for Democracy” movement on December 28 and 29, 2013. According to the complaint, Pasha and hundreds of others allegedly occupied the area around Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan residence, using sand-laden trucks to barricade the streets. The filing further states that when the former Prime Minister attempted to leave her home to join the political rally, the accused obstructed her path and deployed pepper spray in an effort to cause harm to her and her associates.
