Sadeeq Agro Chairman Imran Hossain formally arrested in July uprising attempted murder case

A Dhaka court has ordered the formal arrest of Sadiq Agro chairman Imran Hossain in connection with an attempted murder case filed at Mohammadpur Police Station during the July anti-government protests. Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Jamshed Alam issued the directive on Monday, following a petition submitted by the investigating officer.
Hossain has been in custody since March 3, when he was apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on charges of laundering 133 million taka. While already imprisoned, he became a focus of the Mohammadpur investigation when police requested his arrest as a suspect in the violent crackdown on protesters. According to the court, preliminary findings indicate sufficient evidence linking him to the unrest that occurred in the Mohammadpur area.
The underlying case stems from a complaint filed by Md. Saleman, who sustained gunshot wounds to his legs during the turmoil. The incident, which took place around the Bosila Beribadh and Bosila Bridge areas on August 3, involved coordinated attacks on demonstrators by groups affiliated with the then-ruling Awami League, including its student and youth wings. Saleman’s complaint lists 35 individuals as defendants, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
During Monday’s proceedings, defense counsel opposed the petition to officially record Hossain as an arrestee in the new case. However, state prosecutors successfully argued that his involvement necessitated the move. Following the hearing, the court granted the application and ordered that Hossain remain in prison pending further legal action.
