International Crimes Tribunal grants one-day custody for former MP Abdus Sobhan Golap and ex-IGP Shahidul Haque

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 granted authorization on Thursday for the one-day interrogation of former Member of Parliament Abdus Sobhan Golap and former Inspector General of Police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Haque in connection with separate cases of crimes against humanity.
The tribunal’s investigation agency will interrogate Abdus Sobhan Golap regarding allegations tied to the July mass uprising in Madaripur. During the proceedings, the prosecution stated that security forces, supported by activists from the Awami League and its affiliated organizations, opened fire on demonstrators, resulting in numerous casualties. Prosecutors argued that Golap’s involvement necessitates a formal interrogation to ascertain his role in the crackdown.
In a separate proceeding, the tribunal approved the interrogation of former IGP Shahidul Haque concerning the death of retired Major Zahidul Islam. The prosecution alleged that Zahidul was systematically targeted and killed during a police operation in Mirpur’s Rupnagar on September 2, 2016. According to the state, the victim was falsely labeled a militant to provide a pretext for the killing, and his wife and children were subsequently subjected to enforced disappearance. The tribunal noted that Shahidul Haque’s testimony is essential to uncovering the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In issuing the orders, the tribunal emphasized that the investigative agency must ensure the interrogations are conducted in strict accordance with the law.
