Free WiFi to be provided at airports, railway stations, hospitals: IT Minister

Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam said that the government has taken the initiative to gradually bring free WiFi services to all airports, railway stations and long-distance trains in the country. Work has already started for this purpose.

The minister gave this information in the speech of the chief guest at the discussion meeting titled ‘Internet for all’ organized in the conference room of the office of the District Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar on Saturday (April 11) morning.

Referring to the strengthening of security in the coastal areas, Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam said that satellite-based internet services are essential for the safety of fishing trawlers and fishermen in the Bay of Bengal. This will facilitate early warning of cyclones, prevention of piracy and emergency communication. In this case, the cooperation of all concerned parties is required.

Regarding the development of the tourism sector, Fakir Mahbub Anam said that the work of bringing the tourist centers of Cox’s Bazar under free WiFi is in progress. The government has taken initiatives to develop infrastructure and create an investment-friendly environment to attract foreign tourists. At the same time, he urged the local businessmen and residents to behave courteously with tourists and keep the city clean.

Emphasizing on the expansion of technology education in the meeting, the minister said that besides expanding internet services at the upazila level, various projects are being implemented to create skilled manpower in the freelancing and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors.
