Court orders Salman F Rahman arrested in July uprising attempted murder case

A Dhaka court on Wednesday ordered that Salman F. Rahman, the former private industry and investment adviser to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, be formally arrested in connection with an attempted murder case filed during the July mass uprising.

Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaeed issued the order during a hearing at the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. State prosecutor Mohammad Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed the development, noting that the charges stem from an incident at Dhanmondi Police Station.

The case originated from a complaint filed on August 22, 2024, by Abdul Hannan Sarkar, whose son, Modachir Rahman, was allegedly targeted during the anti-government student protests. Following an investigation by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), officer Yasin Ali submitted a formal charge sheet to the court on March 9, naming Rahman as the fourth defendant. The court subsequently issued an arrest warrant on July 5 after determining there was sufficient evidence linking him to the incident.

Salman F. Rahman was brought to the courthouse under heavy police security, wearing a bulletproof vest and helmet. Once inside the courtroom, officers removed his handcuffs and protective gear before the magistrate finalized the order to formally register his arrest in the Dhanmondi case.

Since the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina administration, Rahman has been detained in connection with multiple legal proceedings. He was initially taken into custody by police on August 13, 2024, near the Sadarghat area, and has remained incarcerated since that time.
