Kushtia family mourns double tragedy as granddaughter dies hours after grandfathers funeral

A family in the village of Purba Para in Kushtia’s Daulatpur upazila is mourning a double tragedy after a grandfather and his granddaughter died within six hours of each other on Saturday. The community remains in shock following the consecutive burials of the two relatives, who were laid to rest side-by-side.
The sequence of events began Friday afternoon with the passing of 74-year-old freedom fighter Phulbas Ali, who died of old age. On Saturday morning, his son, Tujam Uddin, attended his father’s funeral, which was held with state honors in the presence of local government officials.

As Tujam Uddin was walking home from the Manikdiar cemetery, he received news that his 20-year-old daughter, Munni Khatun, had died while being transported to a hospital. Munni, who had been married to a resident of Thana Para village for about a year, was reportedly devastated by her grandfather’s death. According to family members, she spent Friday night inconsolable by her grandfather’s body before falling unconscious.
Munni was initially admitted to Kushtia General Hospital, but as her condition deteriorated, her family attempted to transfer her to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. She died while in transit.

Tujam Uddin explained that his daughter had been battling underlying health issues, including diabetes and a recent bout of typhoid, which left her physically vulnerable to the extreme emotional distress caused by the loss of her grandfather. By Saturday afternoon, the family held a second funeral, burying Munni in a plot adjacent to the one they had prepared for her grandfather only hours earlier.
Family relative Saidul Islam described the ordeal as an unbearable weight for the household, noting that the community remains stunned by the rapid succession of the two deaths.
