Background of the Incident

According to police and witnesses, Parul—daughter of the late Saber Ahmed from Dinajpur—is the third wife of Rakib Mollah, residing in Dhaka’s Kalyanpur. Following a domestic dispute, Rakib brought Parul to Santahar on Sunday night to leave her at her paternal home. However, after another altercation at the station, Rakib reportedly abandoned her and boarded a different train back to Dhaka.

Repeated Attempts at Self-Harm

This was not the woman’s first attempt that night:

  • 3:30 AM: Parul first attempted suicide by lying on the tracks at Platform No. 2 of Santahar Junction. Railway police and staff rescued her.
  • 4:30 AM: After expressing a desire to go to her mother’s house, officials boarded her onto the Panchagarh Express. Shortly after the train started moving, she claimed she needed to use the restroom but instead jumped from the carriage door near the Pouota rail gate.

Medical Status and Family Reaction

Railway Police and Fire Service personnel rescued her in critical condition and rushed her to Naogaon Sadar Hospital. SI Fazlur Rahman of Santahar Railway Police confirmed that while her injuries are severe, doctors have declared her out of danger.

However, the victim’s mother, Mahmuda Begum, expressed deep frustration and detachment from her daughter.

“She has left home with men three times before. We have severed all ties with her and do not even know her husband’s name. I have no further information to give about a daughter who destroys her parents’ honor,” she told reporters.

Current Status

Habibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Santahar Railway Police Station, stated that Parul is currently undergoing treatment. Police intend to hand her over to her mother’s custody once legal formalities are completed
