Man killed in knife attack over domestic dispute in Sylhet

A 28-year-old man was killed in a violent confrontation in Kanaighat, Sylhet, on Wednesday evening following a domestic dispute over the return of his estranged wife. The victim, Jahangir Alam, was intercepted and attacked by a group of men while traveling near the Karuna Sundari Dighi road in Boroband village.

Family members reported that Jahangir’s wife had moved to her parents’ home with their two children approximately two months ago following a domestic disagreement. Jahangir had allegedly sought the assistance of his brother-in-law, Shamim Uddin, to facilitate a reconciliation and bring his wife back home.

The situation escalated Wednesday afternoon when an argument erupted between the two parties. Although Jahangir initially left the scene to de-escalate the tension, he was ambushed while walking toward the Boroband market later that evening. According to allegations filed by the victim’s family, Shamim Uddin, accompanied by his brothers Dalim Uddin and Naim Uddin, along with relatives Tareq Ahmad and Shahed Ahmad, lay in wait for him. The group allegedly attacked the victim with sharp weapons, inflicting multiple fatal injuries.

Bystanders rushed Jahangir to Sylhet M.A.G. Osmani Medical College Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries before arriving at the facility. His body has since been transferred to the hospital morgue.

Kanaighat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam confirmed that police have inspected the scene of the crime. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and are actively pursuing the suspects involved in the attack.
