Dhaka National Zoo Expands Collection With Arrival of African Wildlife

The Bangladesh National Zoo in Mirpur has expanded its animal collection with the arrival of four exotic species imported from South Africa. The new additions include a pair of common elands—one male and one female—along with two male wildebeests.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Sultan Salahuddin Tuku officially released the animals into their enclosures during a ceremony held at the zoo on Tuesday. According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, the acquisition is part of a broader government initiative to elevate the facility to international standards.

During the event, the State Minister emphasized that the government is committed to transforming the national zoo into a modern institution that integrates wildlife conservation, scientific research, educational outreach, and public recreation. He noted that the introduction of these animals serves both to enrich the visitor experience and to strengthen national efforts in biodiversity preservation.

The ceremony was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Department of Livestock Services Director General Md. Shahjahan Khan, Director of Administration Md. Boyzar Rahman, and the Director of the Bangladesh National Zoo, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam Talukder.
