Jagannath University student dies after battle with cancer

Mohammad Nur Nabi, a finance student at Jagannath University, has died following a protracted battle with a rare form of bone cancer. The 2020-21 academic year student passed away on Monday afternoon while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Vellore, India.
His journey was marked by profound resilience and dedication to his education. After being diagnosed with bone cancer in 2018, Nabi underwent an amputation but continued to pursue his studies with the aid of a prosthetic limb. Despite the physical challenges, he traveled nearly 55 kilometers daily from Savar to attend classes at the university, successfully completing seven semesters of his degree. His perseverance turned him into a symbol of inspiration among his peers and faculty members.

The severity of his condition escalated recently when the cancer metastasized to his lungs and bones, necessitating specialized care abroad at the Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore. His family, led by his father—a retired schoolteacher also struggling with the health complications of a stroke—exhausted their financial resources, including the sale of their ancestral land and home, to fund his medical expenses.
The university community had previously rallied to support the student, organizing charity concerts and individual fundraising efforts to assist with his treatment costs. Despite these collective attempts to provide aid, his health continued to decline.

News of his passing has cast a shadow of mourning over the Jagannath University campus. On social media, students and faculty have shared tributes honoring his courage and academic determination. Departmental professors expressed their condolences, noting that his premature death is a significant loss for the university community.
