Chittagong Chief Metropolitan Magistrate installs complaint box to address judicial misconduct and corruption

The Chittagong Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court has installed a dedicated complaint box at its premises to bolster transparency and administrative accountability within the judicial system. CMM A.G.M. Monirul Hasan Sarkar inaugurated the initiative on Tuesday, aiming to curb corruption and address irregularities in court operations.

According to administrative officer Gias Uddin Chowdhury, the measure aligns with the CMM’s authority under Section 25 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, which designates the official as a ‘Justice of the Peace.’ The initiative is designed to provide citizens and litigants with a direct channel to report grievances, including issues related to police verification processes or misconduct and harassment by court staff.

While the box serves as a mechanism for oversight, officials clarified that it does not replace the standard judicial process and will not be used to register formal criminal cases. Instead, the CMM will review submissions to determine if further administrative or judicial action is warranted. To discourage abuse of the system, authorities warned that legal action will be taken against individuals who submit false complaints with malicious intent.

The complaint box, titled “To the CMM, Chittagong,” is located at the court building and is under the direct supervision of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate. In addition to physical written submissions, complainants may send reports via email to [email protected]. The court has pledged to maintain strict confidentiality regarding the identities of complainants and has promised to ensure their personal safety during the investigation process.
