Shariatpur Court Orders Case Following Assault on School Headmaster

A legal battle has erupted in Shariatpur following the assault of Sujit Karmakar, the headmaster of Damudya Pilot Girls’ High School, who was physically attacked by a group of individuals while attempting to enter his workplace. The educator filed a formal complaint at the Shariatpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Monday, naming eight suspects and citing an additional nine unidentified individuals for extortion and assault.

Presiding Judge Abdullah Al Hasib formally accepted the complaint on Monday and directed local law enforcement to register the case as a First Information Report (FIR). Despite the court’s intervention, Damudya Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Jahangir Alam stated that police had yet to receive official documentation from the court, noting that they would initiate formal proceedings once the legal papers arrive.

The incident occurred on Sunday morning when Karmakar arrived at the school gates in a CNG-run autorickshaw. Video footage circulating on social media shows the headmaster being accosted, physically beaten, and forced back into the vehicle by a group of youths. Following the assault, the educator was admitted to the Shariatpur Sadar Hospital for medical treatment.

Karmakar, who has led the institution since 2013, alleged that he has been the target of ongoing intimidation from a faction both inside and outside the school. According to reports, tensions escalated two years ago when local opponents accused him of harassing students. Following the change in government in 2024, renewed pressure from local groups prompted the headmaster to take leave starting in mid-September. He had been away from campus until his ill-fated attempt to return to duty this past Sunday.

Representing the plaintiff, lawyer Jashim Uddin confirmed that substantial evidence was submitted to the court to support the allegations of extortion and violence. Karmakar maintains that he was forced to seek legal recourse after facing relentless pressure from the group, which he claims has been actively obstructing his professional duties.
