Three Workers Burned Following Explosion at Steel Plant

Three laborers sustained burn injuries during a workplace explosion at a steel mill in the Demra area of Dhaka on Sunday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. at Zahir Steel Mill in the Basherpul neighborhood while the workers were engaged in smelting iron.

According to a colleague who transported the victims to the facility, the explosion caused molten iron to spray across the immediate area, severely burning the three men. The injured workers have been identified as 28-year-old Sabbir Hossain, 48-year-old Tofazzal Hossain, and 52-year-old Majed Hossain.

The victims were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for urgent care. Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the resident surgeon at the institute, reported that Sabbir Hossain suffered burns to 35 percent of his body, while Tofazzal Hossain sustained 23 percent burns; both remain hospitalized for further treatment. Majed Hossain, who suffered burns to 1 percent of his body, was released following emergency primary care.

The three men, all of whom reside in rented housing in Demra, originally hail from the districts of Rangpur and Rajbari. Authorities have not yet released details regarding the specific cause of the blast or safety compliance protocols at the facility.
