Rain-hit month gives way to rising temperatures in final days

Bangladesh experienced a fluctuating meteorological pattern throughout May, transitioning from an initial period of steady rainfall to rising temperatures as the month drew to a close. Despite the late-month warming, the country largely avoided prolonged spells of oppressive humidity, maintaining relatively tolerable conditions across most regions.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecasted a slight uptick in temperatures on Sunday, the final day of the month. While the heat is expected to intensify marginally, the forecast also suggests the likelihood of scattered rainfall in parts of the country, with meteorologists predicting a possibility of light precipitation in the capital, Dhaka.

Rainfall had diminished across the country beginning last Thursday, following a period of persistent showers. Despite this reduction, sporadic rainfall has continued to keep temperatures within a manageable range. Saturday saw no reports of heatwaves nationwide. While the highest temperature was recorded in Koyra, Khulna, at 36 degrees Celsius, officials noted that a localized temperature spike at a single station does not qualify as an official heatwave.

Regional weather data indicates that even as the warming trend persists, moisture remains present in the atmosphere. Rangamati recorded the highest rainfall on Saturday at 37 millimeters. Conversely, the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions remained dry, marking a pause in the precipitation that had dominated those regions for several consecutive days.

Looking ahead, forecasters anticipate rain or thundershowers in various parts of the country. These conditions are expected to be most concentrated in the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, where some areas may experience heavy rainfall. The Rangpur, Rajshahi, Khulna, Dhaka, and Barishal divisions are also expected to see isolated instances of precipitation.
