Samsung Challenges Apple with the Launch of Galaxy XR — Priced at Almost Half of Apple’s Vision Pro

South Korean tech giant Samsung is set to challenge Apple in the mixed-reality space with its newly announced Galaxy XR headset, launching in the United States at a price of $1,799 — nearly half the cost of Apple’s Vision Pro, which starts at $3,499.
In Bangladeshi currency, the Galaxy XR would cost roughly ৳215,000, while the Vision Pro is priced at around ৳420,000.
Samsung has partnered with Google on this project. Google provides a custom version of the Android operating system and integrates its AI assistant, Gemini, directly into the headset.
Blending Reality and Virtual Worlds
The Galaxy XR is designed to capture the user’s surroundings through external cameras and display them on screens in front of the eyes. It can then overlay digital elements onto the real-world view, creating a seamless blend of physical and virtual environments.
Users can also immerse themselves fully in virtual worlds, much like traditional VR headsets, for gaming, movies, or 3D creative work.
Apple’s Vision Pro Remains a Premium Device
Apple launched its Vision Pro in February 2024, and recently unveiled a more powerful upgraded version. However, due to its high price, the Vision Pro remains a niche product primarily used by professionals and tech enthusiasts in fields like design, medicine, and engineering.
Inspiration and Differences
Early reports suggest that Samsung and Google’s headset is heavily inspired by Apple’s Vision Pro in both interface and functionality. Still, there are some notable differences:
- The Galaxy XR features a plastic frame, while Apple uses aluminum for its premium design.
- Unlike Apple’s headset, Samsung’s model does not display a simulation of the user’s eyes on the front in certain modes.
Market Outlook
Analysts believe that with its lower price point and Google’s AI integration, Samsung’s Galaxy XR could become a strong competitor to Apple’s Vision Pro. However, success will depend on whether Samsung can prove the headset is not just a cheaper alternative, but a truly powerful and user-friendly experience in its own right.
