Son arrested for murdering mother and stabbing father in Kurigram

Police recovered the blood-stained body of a woman from a residential home in Kurigram Sadar Upazila and admitted her critically injured husband to the Rangpur Medical College Hospital on Wednesday morning (October 15). Authorities have detained the couple's 30-year-old son, Muttakin Alam, in connection with the incident, which relatives claim was triggered by a dispute over drug money.

The tragic episode unfolded at approximately 6:30 AM at the family residence in Palashbari area of Belgachha Union within Kurigram Sadar Upazila. The deceased was identified as Parul Begum, wife of Sardar Ali. According to police and local accounts, Muttakin had a history of severe drug addiction and previously spent nearly two years at a rehabilitation center in Bogura before his family brought him home recently. However, he relapsed into substance abuse shortly after returning.

Investigators revealed that the altercation began early Wednesday morning when Muttakin pressured his mother, Parul Begum, to hand over money for purchasing drugs. An intense verbal feud erupted when she refused the demand. The situation escalated rapidly as the young man entered the house and repeatedly stabbed his mother, inflicting fatal wounds that caused her death at the scene.

When Sardar Ali rushed forward to protect his wife, Muttakin turned the weapon on his father, stabbing him before fleeing the premises. Local residents subsequently rushed the injured father to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. Later in the morning at around 10:00 AM, vigilant locals apprehended Muttakin in the Majhipara area and handed him over to law enforcement personnel.

in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain stated that the body of Parul Begum has been retrieved and sent to the Kurigram General Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Legal proceedings regarding the incident are currently underway, the police official added.
