Ex-Diplomat Sufiur Rahman Appointed to UN Human Rights Council Advisory Committee

Former permanent representative of Bangladesh to Geneva Mohammad Sufiur Rahman elected as member of the advisory committee for the Asia-Pacific region during the 63rd session of the United Nations Human Rights Council

Former Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to Geneva, Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, has been elected as a member of the Advisory Committee of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC). The election took place during the 63rd session of the Asia-Pacific regional group at the advisory committee meeting.

The UNHRC officially announced his election through a post on the social media platform X on Wednesday.

The advisory committee functions as the think tank and expert body of the UNHRC. Comprising international legal experts and seasoned diplomats, the committee provides expertise, undertakes research on human rights issues, and offers specialized recommendations and advice upon the council's request.

Mohammad Sufiur Rahman's extensive diplomatic career includes direct engagement with UNHRC proceedings while serving as a counsellor at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission in Geneva during 1999 and 2000.

Throughout his distinguished career, the former diplomat served as Bangladesh's High Commissioner to Australia and Sri Lanka, as well as Ambassador to Myanmar. Following his retirement from diplomatic service, he has been contributing to academia as a senior research fellow at the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance (SIPG) at North South University.
