Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Abdus Salam has declared that the entire thoroughfare stretching from Gulistan to Sadarghat will be kept strictly free of encroachments, warning that unauthorized street vendors will face goods confiscation and potential arrest.
Speaking to journalists during an eviction drive in the capital's Gulistan area on Wednesday, Salam emphasized that no hawkers will be permitted to occupy the roads or footpaths outside designated zones.
00 AM to 1:00 PM, DSCC carried out a comprehensive clearance operation near the Dhaka Trade Center and Fulbaria Super Market in Gulistan. The drive successfully dismantled over a hundred illegal shops and makeshift structures constructed on footpaths, utilizing heavy machinery, including payloaders, to demolish the unauthorized installations while seizing commercial equipment and goods.
Elaborating on alternative arrangements, the DSCC administrator noted that specific footpaths, night markets, and holiday markets have already been allocated for vendors to conduct their business. However, he reiterated that the main artery from Gulistan to Sadarghat must remain completely unobstructed to ensure unhindered public movement.
Addressing the recurring trend of vendors reoccupying cleared spaces, Salam stated that hawkers had been warned through various channels and that multiple meetings had been held with vendor association leaders. Given that illegal stalls continue to reappear following evictions, he stressed that stringent legal measures are now the only viable recourse.
To maintain public order and ensure the enforcement of civic regulations, the Wednesday operation involved four executive magistrates, over a hundred eviction personnel, and six platoons of police. The drive was spearheaded by DSCC Chief Property Officer and Executive Magistrate Rezaul Karim, Chief Revenue Officer and Executive Magistrate Jonaed Kabir Sohag, Property Officer and Executive Magistrate Hasiba Khan, and Executive Magistrate Aminul Islam.
City authorities affirmed that regular enforcement drives will continue across the jurisdiction to guarantee safe and uninterrupted pedestrian mobility.
