Chalanbeel Village Emerges Safe Sanctuary for Asian Openbill Birds
As dawn breaks over the rural landscape, flocks of Asian openbill storks take flight from their roosts, filling the air with a cacophony of chirping and wing-flapping. This vibrant morning routine unfolds daily in Ulipur, a remote village nestled beside a centuries-old, 100-bigha pond in the Chalanbeel region of Tarash Upazila in Sirajganj district. Surrounded by human habitation, this scenic settlement has organically transformed into a thriving sanctuary for hundreds of migratory and local birds, earning it the affectionate moniker of the village of birds.
Centering around the historic Ulipur pond and its ancient banyan trees, the avian colony features predominantly Asian openbill storks alongside cormorants and other smaller species. According to local accounts, the storks began arriving and nesting in the village trees roughly a decade ago. Over the years, the birds have established permanent residency, breeding and hatching their chicks annually during the nesting season. The ecosystem provides them with an abundance of aquatic food sources, including fish, crabs, and frogs, which thrive in the wetland environment.
The peaceful coexistence between humans and wildlife in Ulipur is largely driven by the unwavering vigilance of the villagers. Sanatan Das, a local college teacher, emphasized that residents prioritize the security of the storks, actively discouraging visitors from disturbing the habitat. This community-led conservation effort has cultivated a safe haven where wildlife flourishes amidst everyday human activity. The village has also begun drawing outsiders, ranging from curious sightseers like schoolteacher Suman Kumar Pal to environmental advocates and local bards such as Abdul Mazed, who immortalizes the birds in traditional folk songs.
Environmental activists and local authorities have taken note of the unique ecological significance of the site. Md Abdur Razzaq, director of the environmental organization Swadhin Jibon, noted that the Asian openbill is a protected species found across South and Southeast Asia, typically remaining in areas that offer favorable weather, adequate nourishment, and strict protection. Acknowledging the spontaneous sanctuary, Tarash Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nusrat Jahan stated that the local administration is fully aware of the avian colonies at Ulipur pond and remains committed to ensuring their continued safety.
