A 62-year-old farmer in Narail Sadar Upazila sustained a snakebite on Monday afternoon while performing with a venomous monocled cobra that he had captured shortly before. The incident occurred in Burikhali area under Auria Union of the Upazila when Golam Rabbani, known locally for his hobby of catching and displaying snakes alongside his primary occupation of farming, responded to a call from his neighbors.
According to family members and local accounts, residents of the neighborhood spotted two cobras inside the kitchen of Rabbani's paternal uncle, Hannan Khan, around midday on Monday. Before Rabbani arrived at the scene, villagers managed to kill one of the snakes. Rabbani successfully captured the surviving cobra and subsequently took it to a nearby local shop, where he began exhibiting the reptile to gathered onlookers.
The incident took place when Rabbani attempted to maneuver the snake back into a bag after the performance, at which point the reptile bit his hand. Undeterred, he placed the biting snake inside the bag and traveled independently to Narail District Hospital to seek medical intervention.
Sharmin Sharmi, the emergency medical officer on duty at Narail District Hospital, confirmed that Rabbani arrived at the medical facility within thirty minutes of being bitten. The physician noted that although the patient appeared stable upon arrival, the reptile was confirmed to be venomous, prompting medical staff to administer antivenom and all necessary therapeutic protocols as a precautionary measure.
Reflecting on the episode from his hospital bed, Rabbani explained that he brought the live snake to the hospital inside a bag before sending it back to his residence because other patients and staff were terrified of the animal. Attending physicians confirmed that the patient is currently out of danger and recovering under observation.
