Zubaida Rahman Praises Resilience of Milestone Tragedy Survivors at First Anniversary Commemoration

Zubaida Rahman, wife of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, lauded the resilience and courage of the families, students, and teachers affected by the Milestone tragedy, describing their ability to transform profound grief into strength as a source of national inspiration. Addressing a commemorative event held Tuesday at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, Rahman stated that the fortitude displayed by the survivors would serve as a guiding light for the nation in overcoming future crises.
The memorial, titled “July 21 Milestone Tragedy: Tributes and Remembrance 2026,” marked the first anniversary of the aviation disaster that claimed 35 lives. On July 21 of last year, an air force fighter jet crashed into the Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Diabari area. The catastrophe resulted in the deaths of 28 students, three teachers, three guardians, and one staff member, along with the jet’s pilot, Flight Lieutenant Md. Toukir Islam.

Prior to her address, Rahman toured an exhibition featuring photographs and names of the victims and the survivors who have since recovered from their injuries. Expressing deep sorrow for the lost lives, she acknowledged the shock and helplessness that gripped the nation in the immediate aftermath of the accident. She extended her solidarity to the grieving families and wished for the continued recovery of those still managing the physical and emotional toll of the tragedy.
Rahman emphasized that the unwavering determination of the survivors to move forward despite their harrowing experiences is a testament to the human spirit. She credited the families and the supportive community for playing a pivotal role in this recovery process, noting that their collective resolve fosters a stronger national capacity for empathy and mutual assistance during times of adversity.

The ceremony also served to honor the responders and volunteers who acted swiftly in the disaster’s wake. Rahman specifically commended the efforts of the Fire Service, the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), the Ziaur Rahman Foundation, and the staff at the Burn Institute. She highlighted their bravery, noting that prioritizing the lives of others at great personal risk remains a rare and historic example of selflessness.
The event, presided over by Professor Mohammad Nasir Uddin, director of the Burn Institute, was attended by Health Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain and State Minister M.A. Muhit. Dignitaries including Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi, Singaporean Charge d’Affaires Michelle Lee, and Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen were also present. During the program, international ambassadors and medical professionals who contributed to the rescue and recovery efforts were formally honored for their humanitarian service.
