With the countdown to the FIFA World Cup entering its final days, Chittagong’s retail hubs are experiencing a surge in demand for team kits, as fervent football supporters prepare for the “greatest show on earth.” From the bustling corridors of the New Market area to the specialized sports shops surrounding the M.A. Aziz Stadium, the city is awash in the colors of national teams, with local traders reporting sales spikes up to six times higher than typical periods.

The upcoming tournament, which will feature 48 teams divided into 12 groups, is set to span 39 days across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While global experts analyze the tactical prospects of the 104-match tournament, fans in Chittagong are focused on loyalty, with Argentina and Brazil remaining the clear favorites in the marketplace.

Retailers note that while kits for France and Spain are gaining traction among younger fans, the iconic blue-and-white stripes of Argentina and the canary yellow of Brazil dominate sales volume. At Mohsen Aulia Khelaghar, shop owner Mohammad Jahangir describes the current atmosphere as akin to a national festival. He attributes much of the demand to Lionel Messi, noting that the Argentine captain’s number 10 jersey is the single most requested item across all age groups.

The trend is echoed at the stadium precinct in Kazir Dewri, where dozens of sports retailers have transformed their storefronts into galleries of global football kits. At Isma Sports in the Apollo Shopping Center, proprietor Mohammad Shawkat Ali emphasized that the market has shifted toward personalized jerseys. Fans are no longer just seeking team colors; they are specifically prioritizing the names and numbers of superstars such as Kylian Mbappé, Neymar, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Despite the intense commercial focus on traditional powerhouses, there is evidence of evolving allegiances. Younger fans, such as college student Ishmam Uddin, are increasingly drawn to the tactical discipline of European teams like France. While veteran supporters remain entrenched in the long-standing rivalry between South American giants, the diverse preferences of the new generation reflect a broader appreciation for the sport’s global talent pool.

As the June 11 opener between Mexico and South Africa approaches, the city’s football fever continues to intensify. For local merchants, the tournament represents a vital commercial cycle, while for supporters, the purchase of a jersey serves as a tangible expression of anticipation for the month-long competition, which concludes with the final on July 19.
