Woman killed, two injured in Netrokona home invasion over loan refusal

A 50-year-old woman was fatally stabbed in her home in Netrokona on Monday night after she reportedly refused to give money to a local man who had frequently solicited loans from her. The attack, which took place in the town’s North Katli area around 9 p.m., also left the victim’s husband and son with severe injuries.
According to police and local accounts, the suspect, 32-year-old local e-bike driver Abdur Rashid, entered the second-floor apartment of contractor Md. Abu Chan while most of the family members were away. Rashid allegedly demanded 5,000 taka from the victim, Manowara Begum. When she refused his request, Rashid reportedly attacked her with a meat cleaver, killing her on the spot before concealing the body under a bed.

The crime was uncovered when the victim’s 25-year-old son, Abir Hasan, returned home and witnessed the scene. Rashid allegedly turned on him, stabbing him repeatedly before throwing him from the floor. The victim’s husband, Abu Chan, was also injured while attempting to intervene and rescue his son.
Local residents intervened shortly after the altercation, detaining Rashid and turning him over to the police. The wounded father and son were rushed to the Netrokona 250-bed District Hospital. Abir Hasan was later transferred to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment due to the severity of his injuries.

Netrokona Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle) Sajal Kumar Sarkar confirmed that the suspect appears to be a regular drug user. Preliminary investigations suggest the motive was financial, driven by the suspect’s need for drug money, though authorities are continuing to examine whether other factors contributed to the violence. The victim’s body has been sent to the morgue for an autopsy.
